<p>The name ‘<samp>maidag</samp>’ stands for <i>Mai</i>l <i>d</i>elivery <i>ag</i>ent. It
is a general-purpose <acronym>MDA</acronym> offering a rich set of
features. It can operate both in traditional mode, reading the message
from its standard input, and in <acronym>LMTP</acronym> mode. <code>Maidag</code>
is able to deliver mail to any mailbox format, supported by GNU
Mailutils. These formats, among others, include ‘<samp>remote+smtp</samp>’,
‘<samp>remote+prog</samp>’ and ‘<samp>remote+sendmail</samp>’ which are
equivalent to forwarding a message over <acronym>SMTP</acronym> to a remote
node. Thus, <code>maidag</code> supersedes both <code>mail.local</code> and
<code>mail.remote</code> utilities from GNU Mailutils versions prior to
2.0.
</p>
<p><code>Maidag</code> is also able to process incoming messages using
Sieve, Scheme or Python scripts and, based on results of this
processing, to take a decision on whether to actually deliver and
where to deliver them. Due to its extensive scripting facilities,
<code>maidag</code> offers much more flexibility than other popular
<acronym>MDA</acronym>s, such as <code>procmail</code>.
